Rainforest
& Reef Visitor Centre
A unique and
vibrant introduction to the World Heritage areas of the Cardwell
region.
Part
man, part eel, Girroo Gurrll, is the ancestral spirit of the
Girramay people. The Rainforest and Reef Centre Display traces
his journey of discovery through this ancient and precious
region, presenting an extraordinary display that is highly
visual, tactile and audible, appealing to visitors of all
ages.
Wander
through and experience the changing landscapes, from open
forests, into dense rainforest, down to the coastal mangroves
and on, out to majestic Hinchinbrook Island and the magnificent
islands of the Great Barrier Reef. Meet the creatures along
the path, from the shy, stripped possum to the lurking python,
a basking crocodile, turtles, dugong ии.. The display, which
is full of colour and surprises, depicts mammals, birds, reptiles,
marine creatures, forests, landscapes, wildlife, natural and
cultural history and much more! The Centre is located 500m
south of Kookaburra, alongside the jetty. Admission is free,
although a gold coin donation would be appreciated! The Centre
is open daily from 8am, closing 4.30pm Monday to Friday. At
weekends and on public holidays the centre closes at noon.
Information
on the national parks of the region is available from Queensland
Parks and Wildlife Service, at the Rainforest and Reef Centre.
Permits to camp on Goold Island, at Macushla and The Haven
on Hinchinbrook Island, as well as the 32km Thorsborne Trail,
are also issued at the centre. In addition, the video, "Without
a Trace", promoting low impact camping, can be viewed here.
