Five Mile Swimming Hole

This attractive picnic spot and cool, shaded swimming hole, safe from crocs, sharks and stingers, is popular all year round.

Excellent facilities including barbecues, toilets and easy access to the water have been provided by the Department of Natural Resources, just 700m off the highway, 7km south of Cardwell.

Tully Gorge

A picnic day trip to this area places you in truly spectacular mountain gorges complete with lacy waterfalls, dense rainforest and raging white water. The Tully River is renowned as a whitewater rafting river and is also used by canoeists.

Light line sport-fishing is great. The region is a showcase for some of the North's most spectacular butterflies. Along the banks of the river you will find a number of rest areas, BBQ settings and vantage points to view the rafts hurtling through the rapids.

Travel North to the sugar town of Tully (44km), turn left into the township and drive up the main street, turning left again at the Post Office, Commonwealth Bank corner. The first of the gorge's picnic areas lies a further 38km up this road. Note: there are no shopping or refuelling facilities in the gorge, last supplies are at Tully.
